We welcome and appreciate your involvement.  An event such as this truly is a team effort; and we applaud your participation. On behalf of the entire MLK, Jr. Oratorical Fest team, "Thank you!"
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
School Site Coordinator – Responsible for coordinating and conducting the school site competitions along with forwarding the regional entries to the Event Director. The school site coordinator is responsible for ensuring that each participant receives a participant certificate signed by the school administrator.

Registration Coordinator – Responsible for overseeing the registration process for the regional and finals competition along with recruiting volunteer registrants.

Registrants – Responsible for registering each school site entry oration for the regional and finals competition event.

Facilitators – Responsible for ensuring that their assigned competition runs effectively and efficiently. The individual should possess strong interpersonal skill and have the ability to work with a large crowd of people.

Assistant Facilitators – Responsible for assisting the Facilitator and serving as the liaison between the judges and Awards Coordinator.

Judges – The panel of judges should be from a diverse community (i.e.: arts, business, education, community). They are responsible for scoring each presenter in four categories. It is critical that they are courteous and respectful of all participants and give them their undivided attention during each oration.

Awards Coordinator (regional and finals) – Responsible for ensuring that all of the judges score sheets for each participant are added together and divided properly to ensure the participants final score and appropriate award level. It is critical that an accurate report is given to each facilitator along with the awards in proper order.

Awards Assistant – Responsible for assisting the Awards Coordinator in ensuring that the proper score and correct awards are given to each participant and delivered to the corresponding facilitators.

Timers – Responsible for timing each oration. Timing begins once the participant speaks the first word of their selected presentation. Individual presenters are allotted three minutes and group renderings are allotted five minutes. There is a one-point deduction for exceeding the time limit.

Scorer – Responsible for collecting and tallying the judges’ sheet and posting the final score on the participants score sheet.

Runner – Responsible for assisting with overall competition operations and ensuring the event runs smoothly.

Reception Host – Responsible for ensuring that all attendees have an invitation and to assist with principal awards and gifts.

Security – Responsible for assisting all participants and attendees with directions to the competition rooms or questions.

Greeters – Responsible for being positioned at key points to assist with traffic control and to ensure that all participants understand their specific room location.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL NON DISTRICT SCHOOLS :
All Charter, Private or Continuing Education Schools Please Read Carefully!


All Schools Must Be Located in Oakland. There is a Nominal Registration Fee of $6.00 Per Non-Oakland Unified School District Students to Cover the Cost of Certificates, Posters and Awards Given to ALL Student Participants.

ELEGIBILITY

  • All Oakland students from kindergarten through grade twelve must be provided the opportunity to participate in competition.
  • All Entries are to originate from the school site.
  • Online Registration Required or faxed entry forms should be signed by the School-Site Oratorical Coordinator and/or Principal.
  • No coaching by students, parents, or teachers during the individual or group presentations.
