Showcasing Literacy Week Descriptions:

March 8 – “Senior Read-In”
Is a tremendous partnership between OUSD’s annual oratorical fest and the West Oakland Senior Center located at 1724 Adeline Street, Oakland, CA. 94607? This dynamic collaboration is bridging the intergenerational gap through literacy. Selected school sites will have the awesome opportunity to have seniors from the community grace their sites and render readings to selected classrooms. The purpose of the day is to demonstrate the importance of literacy and being a lifelong learner.
March 9 – “Speaker Series” Literacy Non-Negotiable
Is a ticketed by invitation only event for stakeholders: students, parents, teachers, administrators, and community leaders. The speaker series is designed to address the crisis of literacy and the racial achievement gap. The purpose is for stakeholders to come together and be invigorated with insight that has the capacity to transform our schools and community through collective efforts.
March 11 – “Expository Essay Finals”
This day is designated for the student entries that have advanced from the Regional’s to the Finals. The participants will not be present it is strictly for the judges. The students that have advanced to the Finals will undergo their final scoring. The winners of the essay contest will be awarded a Chauncey Bailey Scholarship: 1st - $1000; 2nd -$500; 3rd - $250.
