Nate Parker is impassioned both on and off the big screen. He is known best for his heart warming portrayal of Henry Lowe in The Great Debaters on screen and respected for his off screen charitable work.
He is acutely aware of the challenges and obstacles that impact urban students on a daily basis. Understanding that change can only come by one’s efforts he co-founded The Leadership and Literacy Camp Program. The goal of the program is to cultivate leadership amongst inner city youth and college students through educational programs and presentations. The program focuses on increasing literacy amongst youth through a proactive campaign that provides awareness and excitement surrounding reading and research while empowering participants to engage in critical issues that impact their community through structured debates.
Parker relates to Henry Lowe because of the obstacles and challenges Lowe found himself. And, Parker says, he relates to the film because one of the central themes is succinct with his life. “Responsibility,” he said. “Environment is not an excuse anymore. Find a teacher who will inspire you and listen.” |
