Expository Essay Guidelines

All ELGIBILITY:
Seventh and Eighth Grade students attending OUSD schools are invited to participate in the essay contest.

ESSAY PROMPT
Write about a man or woman who had a positive impact on the betterment of humankind. This individual will be a person whose actions or ideas improved the lives of people in the past or whose actions and ideas improved the lives of people living today. Use what you know about this person’s life and times to persuade your reading audience that this individual made the world a better place.

• Historical research/knowledge
SCORING CRITERIA
• Persuasive use of historical evidence and information
• Organization and clarity
• Creativity, passion, and effective use of language
• 500 – 700 words
• ½” margin
• Title page
• Typed doubled space


All participants will receive a (1ST, 2ND, 3RD) place ribbon and a certificate. All first place entries will advance to the finals and notified by Feb. 26, 2010.

All entries must be received on or before the deadline. The participants must register online before submitting their entry at www.tapestryleps.com.

All Charter, Private or Continuing Education Schools Please Read Carefully!


All Schools Must Be Located in Oakland. There is a Nominal Registration Fee of $6.00 Per Non-Oakland Unified School District Students to Cover the Cost of Certificates, Posters and Awards Given to ALL Student Participants.

ELEGIBILITY

  • All Oakland students from kindergarten through grade twelve must be provided the opportunity to participate in competition.
  • All Entries are to originate from the school site.
  • Online Registration Required or faxed entry forms should be signed by the School-Site Oratorical Coordinator and/or Principal.
  • No coaching by students, parents, or teachers during the individual or group presentations.
